Mastering Your Build: Essential Alfresco Rangehood Requirements

The “outdoor room” has evolved into a high-performance culinary space. However, as we move powerful gas barbecues under rooflines and into enclosed alfresco areas, smoke management becomes a critical engineering challenge. Understanding alfresco rangehood requirements is not just about comfort – it is about safety, compliance and protecting your investment. At Pyro Designs, we don’t just supply appliances; we design outcomes that stand up to the rigorous standards of Western Australian building codes.

1. The 1200mm Clearance and Safety Standards

The most vital of all alfresco rangehood requirements is the vertical clearance rule. According to Australian safety standards, there must be a minimum distance of 1200mm between the cooking surface of your barbecue and the grease filters of the rangehood. This clearance is designed to prevent flare-ups from reaching the filtration system, reducing fire risks. Installing a rangehood too low can void your appliance warranties and, more importantly, create a hazard in your home. Every Pyro Designs project factors these specific dimensions into our custom cabinetry layouts from day one.

2. Extraction Power and Smoke Capture Zones

A standard indoor rangehood is insufficient for the volume of smoke and grease produced by an outdoor grill. To meet professional alfresco rangehood requirements, you need a motor capable of moving at least 2000m³/h (cubic metres per hour). Furthermore, your rangehood should be wider than your barbecue to create an effective “capture zone”. For a 900mm barbecue, we recommend a 1200mm rangehood. This ensures that even when the Freo doctor blows through , smoke and airborne oils are captured before they can settle on your porcelain benchtops or ceiling.

3. Compliance for Enclosed Alfresco Spaces

If your outdoor area is semi-enclosed with louvred blinds or permanent walls, your alfresco rangehood requirements may include a gas solenoid interlock. This safety device automatically shuts off the gas supply if the rangehood is not operational, preventing the dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide. By integrating these technical elements into our custom builds, we ensure your kitchen is not only a masterpiece of design but a fully compliant, certified space.
